Marble Surface

Less you assume …

Growing up, my dad use to remind me all the time that to assume something is “to make an ass out of you and me!” In return, I always told people whenever they made comments based on their assumptions, the same thing. However, I questioned the me part, wondering why I should fall prey when I am not the one doing the assuming.

I realized that assumptions are often lies created by a person, while some might not be lies, they are never accurate. So if I post a picture of a guy, most assumptions is that I have a relationship with him and by assuming that, it may cause trouble if the person then goes out to gossip about it.  The comment on assume that my dad usually says is actually a break up of the word ass, u, me. Thus in making an assumption you are trying to make “an ass of me.” Remember everything build on false assumption is false.

Similarly , people tend to make assumptions as to who God is while never knowing Him or even trying to get to know Him. Imagine How God feels when someone who has no idea of who He is, assuming things and creating ideas about Him.

My conclusion, assumptions and gossip says more about who the person doing it is than who you are! God’s name and who He is will never change because of people’s assumptions of Him. The same applies for us, people’s assumptions of us or our lives should not define or change who we are! Left up to me, I’d say to assume something is to make an “ass“ of yourself and yourself only!

Proverbs 18:2

“A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.”

Proverbs 25:8

“Do not hastily bring into court, for what will you do in the end, when your neighbor puts you to shame?”

Always,

SJ
